Genesis G80: Midsize Luxury Sedan

As the first Genesis model created, the G80 has been a staple in the luxury midsize lineup for almost 10 years now. With the recent changes made to the G80, the buzz at Genesis of Carmel is that this is the best G80 yet. We get it; a Genesis dealer website isn't where you would expect to get an impartial breakdown of any vehicle, let alone a model we sell. However, if you know anything about the G80 already, you'll know that it practically sells itself. You might have landed on this page in search of a Genesis G80 dealership; if that's the case, you can skip the details and click the G80 inventory button below. Genesis G80: where to buy?

The experts at Genesis of Carmel, serving Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and plenty of other nearby areas, invite you to enjoy the Genesis shopping experience as it should be. As an independent Genesis dealership, Genesis of Carmel provides unparalleled comfort, amenities, and a level of service that many other Genesis dealerships can't match. While it may be tempting to just find the closest G80 for sale, there are plenty of reasons to go a bit further for a superior experience. Our exclusive focus on Genesis models means there's less competition for service and sales appointments compared to locations that also offer Hyundai. Additionally, not every Genesis showroom is created equal. Our Genesis Premiere Showroom features a chic atmosphere with an open layout designed for your comfort while you explore our Genesis models. We take pride in being the only premiere location within a 100-mile radius of Indianapolis, catering to customers from various surrounding areas. Let Genesis of Carmel show you why we are the best place to buy or lease the new G80 today. We can't wait to meet you!

What is it like inside the G80: Seating, Cargo & Tech

Interior Design:   Even if we're not your local Genesis dealership, we still love the brand and want customers to understand what they are getting from a Genesis model. If you haven't heard, the G80 interior was recently updated, and the experts here at Genesis of Carmel have the scoop for you. While the old G80 interior was perfect for the time, we would be lying if we said it wasn't starting to look a bit dated. Genesis made sure to boldly fix that, and we couldn't have been happier about it. By far the biggest change, the infotainment screen and gauge cluster have been combined into a seamless 27-inch screen that offers better connectivity and customizable driving features. This alone would have been enough for us. On top of that, Genesis updated the steering wheel. We see this as a much more stylish version, as the old steering wheel left something to be desired. New climate controls look more streamlined as the knobs have been replaced with an easy-to-use touch screen. Even little updates like the better control knob on the center console make the G80 simpler to use. All in all, the G80 has a more streamlined look and better tech to match the times, and we couldn't be more thrilled about the change.

Genesis G80 interior updates

Interior Design Recap:

  • A 27-inch display enhances connectivity and offers a sleeker design
  • Revamped steering wheel adds a more stylish design compared to the previous version
  • New climate controls are more modern, with knobs replaced by a user-friendly touch screen
  • Upgraded control knob on the center console makes the G80 easier to operate
  • New G80 features a more polished appearance and advanced technology that aligns with current trends

Technology:   The upgrades to the tech in the new G80 are well thought out and appreciated. The new 27" OLED instrument cluster & navigation system replaces the old infotainment system and gauge cluster. We can't state enough how much this modernizes the style of the G80. One new standard feature that sticks out is the fingerprint scanner that allows you to bring up all of your custom settings with the touch of a fingerprint. The 64-color adjustable lighting is a feature that adds some elegance to your night ride, especially with the deluxe materials used in the G80. And while not exactly revolutionary, having features like the auto-dimming inside mirrors come standard makes the G80 feel premium even on the base model. Having said that, we would recommend going at least up to the 2.5T Advanced simply for the Bang & Olufsen Premium Audio system. There are plenty of great features on higher trims, but if you are on a budget, you won't miss them enough to justify the higher price tag.

Genesis G80 updates

Technology Recap:

  • 27" OLED instrument cluster and navigation system replace the previous infotainment system and gauge cluster.
  • New fingerprint scanner allows access to all your custom settings with just a touch
  • 64-color adjustable lighting adds a touch of elegance to your night drives
  • Standard features like auto-dimming inside mirrors give the G80 a premium feel
  • Upgrade to at least the 2.5T Advanced for the Bang & Olufsen Premium Audio system

Seating options:   If you look at the comfort of a sedan as the primary buying factor, you will be satisfied with the standard features included and will love the highest end the G80 offers. Both the leatherette and leather choices are comfortable, so there's no need to upgrade trims just for a better material. That said, it's wise to know which seating features are essential for you. Both front seats come standard with power adjustment with movable lumbar support. Surprisingly, both the front and rear come with a heating function, which is not particularly common for the rear passengers. You will, however, have to upgrade to one trim higher for options like ventilated seating, perfect for those sweltering Indiana summers. You will also see the feature Ergo-Motion on the higher trims, which is a fancy way of saying massage seating. While we are fully confident in the comfort of the G80's seating, we invite you to visit a Genesis showroom to put it to the test.

Genesis G80 seating

Seats Recap:

  • Both leatherette and leather options are comfortable and look high-quality.
  • Front seats come standard with power adjustments and movable lumbar support.
  • Front and rear seats have a heating function standard on all trims
  • Upgrade one trim for ventilated seating
  • Fully equipped G80 models include a massage driver seat

Cargo and passenger space:   The G80 is a 5-seat sedan in the midsize category. What that means for you is that the G80 is big enough to comfortably seat full-size passengers in the rear seat. Based on the structure of the drivetrain on the G80, a hump at the feet of the rear middle passengers does mean that the G80 is best suited for 2 full-size and one smaller passenger in the back. That's probably going to be the case for a majority of sedans. At 42.2 inches of legroom in the front and 38.7 inches in the rear, the G80 should be able to accommodate most of your passenger needs. The 13.1 cubic feet of space is more on the average range for mid-size sedans. Having a couple sets of golf clubs in the back or 3-4 large luggage bags in the back is around where the G80 will cap out. This can be increased some by dropping the 60/40 split rear seats down. For most of the customers who are looking at a luxury sedan in the first place, this will not have much of an impact. If you need more space, you might want to look at the G90 or GV70.

Cargo & Passenger Recap:

  • G80 is ideally suited for four full-size passengers and one smaller passenger
  • 42.2 inches of legroom in the front and 38.7 inches in the rear
  • Trunk offers 13.1 cubic feet of space, which is average for mid-size sedans
  • Cargo space can be expanded by folding down the 60/40 split rear seats

G80: Redesigned and better than ever

Design updates:   We've seen plenty of redesigns over the years, and sometimes models can almost become unrecognizable compared to past versions. That's decidedly not what happened with the G80. The changes are subtle but still have a large impact on refreshing the design. The G80's grille has been updated with a new G-Matrix Crest Grille design. This feels less busy than the previous grille, so we consider it a nice update. And although the headlights maintain the same dual-line shape, they now feature micro-lens array lighting that outperforms conventional LEDs and looks a bit better. If you take a look at the bottom of the front end, you'll notice more aggressively styled intake ports as well. Some minor details have been changed on the rest of the body as well, but for the most part the style is the same. Overall, the tweaks made to the exterior of the G80 have breathed some new life into a luxury sedan that was already quite popular.

Design Updates Recap:

  • Subtle updates to the exterior have revitalized the G80
  • G80 now has a G-Matrix Crest Grille design
  • Headlights retain their dual-line shape but add micro-lens array lighting
  • More aggressively styled intake ports on the front end

Standout features:   The G80 offers 3 options for rim size: 18-, 19-, or 20-inch. We appreciate that they all complement the design well, and you won't have to make the decision to upgrade trims just on wheel choice alone. We do wish the panoramic sunroof was standard across all trims, but at least it is included in the next trim level. Power-folding side mirrors do come standard on all trims and make getting in and out of the G80 in tight spaces easier. They also project the Genesis logo near the front doors so you can see where you are stepping at night. Is that the most necessary thing? Probably not, but it is a nice touch to a luxury vehicle. A hands-free liftgate is standard on all models, but it becomes a power close trunk at the second trim level.

Genesis G80 rims

Features Recap:

  • G80 offers three rim size options: 18-, 19-, or 20-inch rims.
  • Panoramic sunroof is available on the second trim level and higher
  • All trims come with power-folding side mirrors that project the Genesis logo near the front doors
  • Hands-free liftgate is standard on all models
  • Upgrades to a power-close trunk starting from the second trim level

Visit our Showroom: Our Genesis salesmen have had nothing but positive things to say about the updated G80 design. While we wouldn't necessarily say that we preferred either the old or new style over one another, the changes made are a nice refresh to an already great sedan. Visit our Carmel, IN, Genesis dealership to see the new design in person with plenty of color and trim options.

G80 engine options

The G80 has 2 engine options: Which one should you buy?

The G80 offers 2 engine options and can range from fun to drive to exhilarating. While the best way to learn the difference is by test driving them both at your local Genesis dealer, we can at least explain the primary differences.

The 2.5T:   The first option for G80 trims is the sporty 2.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which provides 300 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque and comes standard with all-wheel drive. This engine is combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and utilizes a multi-link front & rear suspension. All G80 models are fitted with Monobloc 4-piston front brake calipers, providing added confidence on those poor weather days. This all adds up to some impressive acceleration, reaching 0-60 mph in the high-5-second range. The fuel efficiency stands at 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is impressive given its performance. Although this option is enjoyable to drive, some buyers looking for a luxury sedan may prefer the enhanced 3.5T engine.

The 3.5T:   If you're aiming for optimal gas mileage, the 3.5T engine might not be your ideal choice. However, that's certainly not the main reason people choose it. It boasts an exhilarating 375-horsepower, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 391 lb-ft of torque. Clearly, the 3.5T trims focus on sporty performance, and they certainly deliver on that front. But there's more to it. The Electronically Controlled Suspension system featuring Road Preview comes standard on both of the 3.5T models. This system utilizes a forward-facing camera to identify road irregularities such as bumps and potholes. It ensures the smoothest ride possible by promptly adjusting the suspension settings to match the road conditions ahead. And for maximum performance, the 3.5T Sport Prestige adds sport tuning and performance brakes as well. The fuel efficiency for the 3.5T stands at 16 city and 26 highway mpg.

A Genesis dealer's final take on the G80

Overall, Genesis refreshed one of their flagship models without losing what made the G80 a special model to begin with. We appreciate the new streamlined design of the interior, as it makes sure the G80 can compete with the best in its class. The G80 provides ample space, features high-quality materials, and includes all the technological amenities you would anticipate from a Genesis. Although the changes to the exterior are subtle, they still contribute positively to its overall appearance. Not much has changed with the engine options, but that isn't a bad thing, as the previous G80 was a blast to drive. If you are in the market for a midsize luxury sedan, the G80 is so much more than a good option. Visit a Genesis showroom today and discover the impressive G80 for yourself.
